In the Path of Their Duty

By Elder David A. Bednar

Elder David A. Bednar expresses his love, admiration, and gratitude for the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who, like the pioneers of old, faithfully press forward in their duty, even when their service may go unnoticed.

They of the Last Wagon

Elder Bednar recalls President J. Reuben Clark’s tribute to the faithful pioneers who traveled in the last covered wagons of long wagon trains, emphasizing their faith, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the gospel.

President Clark declared, “They of the last wagon pressed forward, worn and tired, footsore, sometimes almost disheartened, borne up by their faith that God loved them, that the restored gospel was true, and that the Lord led and directed the Brethren out in front.”

Scriptural references for further study:
  • Alma 48:17: “If all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever…”

No Less Serviceable

Elder Bednar shares President Howard W. Hunter’s message about the essential contributions of Church members who faithfully serve, even if their efforts go unnoticed by the world, emphasizing that being serviceable is a commendable virtue.

President Hunter said: “If you feel that much of what you do this year or in the years to come does not make you very famous, take heart. Most of the best people who ever lived weren’t very famous either. Serve and grow, faithfully and quietly.”

Scriptural references for further study:
  • Alma 48:19: “Now behold, Helaman and his brethren were no less serviceable unto the people than was Moroni.”

In the Path of Their Duty

Elder Bednar expresses his gratitude for Church members who faithfully walk the covenant path, whether in the background or the forefront, highlighting their selfless acts of service, commitment to family, and dedication to the gospel.

Elder Bednar states, “I am grateful for millions of Church members who today are coming unto the Savior and pressing forward on the covenant path in the last wagons of our contemporary wagon trains—and who truly are no less serviceable.”

Scriptural references for further study:
  • Helaman 15:5: “Behold that the more part of them are in the path of their duty, and they do walk circumspectly before God, and they do observe to keep his commandments and his statutes…”
  • Doctrine and Covenants 84:61: “Therefore, let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion; for all flesh is in mine hands; be still and know that I am God.”

Promise and Testimony

Elder Bednar bears witness that those who faithfully serve and endure for the gospel of Jesus Christ will receive promised blessings and affirms his testimony of the living Heavenly Father and His Son.

Elder Bednar testifies, “I joyfully witness that Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son live and Their promises are sure…”
